Illustrated portrait of Kaijing Ma

I am a first-year Ph.D. student in Computer Science at The University of Texas at Austin, co-advised by Prof. Qiang Liu and Prof. Atlas Wang.

My current interests include long-horizon agents, recursive self-improvement, LLM reasoning, and mechanistic interpretability.

I am grateful to the mentors and collaborators I have met along the way, especially the MAP Open Source Community, whose warm and open research culture has deeply shaped how I think about research, collaboration, and systems building.

Outside research, I enjoy movies, variety shows, and life’s little moments. Feel free to email me. I read every message and will always do my best to reply.

Writing & Projects

Essays, course notes, and living research maps in forms suited to ideas at different stages of development.

A note on the mess: I often write things down as soon as they appear, then return to revise, connect, and reorganize them. Some pages will therefore be rougher than others. This is a living workspace that is continuously updated and never quite a finished archive.

01

Ideas & Essays

Fragments, questions, sketches, and essays from Thoughts, in Passing, an idea garden that is allowed to keep changing.

Thoughts,
in Passing

A lightweight home for questions, fragments, working sketches, and essays. Notes can grow from seeds, connect through backlinks, or simply remain small.

02

Course Notes

Classes reworked through derivations, intuitions, paper connections, and open questions. Research notebooks, not lecture archives.

Foundations,
Re‑derived

Independent research notes developed alongside CS 395T, with derivations, intuitions, paper connections, open questions, and ideas worth testing. This is not a lecture archive.

03

Research Topics

Evidence-grounded maps that connect primary sources, open problems, failure modes, and testable directions.

03 Living research map

Steerability

What does it mean to move a model exactly where we intend without changing anything else? A research map connecting prompting, activation interventions, preference learning, model editing, evaluation, and scalable oversight.

04 Living research map

Weak → Strong

When can a capable model learn from a weaker supervisor without inheriting its capability ceiling? A primary-source map of mechanisms, failure modes, steering, scalable oversight, and testable research directions.

05 Living research map

Flow of Thoughts

How should thoughts flow through a model? A structured map of recurrent, latent, flow-based, and adaptive approaches beyond token-by-token chain-of-thought.

06 Living research map

Low-Precision RL

What changes when the policy that acts, explores, and learns is numerically approximate? An evidence-grounded map of quantized rollouts, policy mismatch, exploration noise, and full-pipeline low-precision training.

07 Living research map

Long-Horizon Agents

Why do capable agents break as tasks become longer? An evidence-backed systems map of horizon scaling, planning, persistent state, verification, context, tool use, long-trajectory learning, and the boundary between models and their harnesses.
